Terms and Agreements of Services

Updated May 7, 2024.

These Terms and Agreements of editorial services provided by Bardo Editorial aim at making this a professional, smooth, and pleasant working experience for both parties. These Terms apply to services provided to clients in Brazil and the United States.

We reserve the right to make any changes to these Terms and Agreements without notice. We always encourage our clients, however, to refer to this page to access the most up-to-date version.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

General Terms and Conditions Overview

These Terms and Agreements apply to any work done for the Client by Bardo Editorial. Please read carefully the General Terms and Conditions below:

  • We have the right to decline any work the Client offers.

  • We will provide a quote for the requested services by email, which will list the details about the requested service, our three-option prices, the agreed deadline, and payment information. The Client will send a written confirmation, which must include the price choice. See more details about pricing in Cost of Services & Payment Agreements below.

  • Upon the Client's confirmation, we will send an updated quote called "Agreement of Services," which will include all details listed above with the price chosen by the Client and the non-refundable deposit information. See more details in Reservation Agreements.

  • We will provide service(s) as the Client and us have agreed on, confirmed in writing by the Client upon receiving the "Agreement of Services" by email.

  • The work will be carried out unsupervised at any time and place as determined by Bardo Editorial, using our own equipment.

  • We are responsible for our own income tax as subject to the Receita Federal (Brazil) and Internal Revenue Services (USA), and will not claim benefits granted to the Client’s employees.

  • We guarantee that all work will be done by Our Team and will not be subcontracted to another person or company.

Services Terms

Prior to beginning any work, the Client and Bardo Editorial will agree, in writing, to the terms of the service requested, which may include:

  • The way in which the manuscript will be marked up (e.g., using Track Changes in Microsoft Word).

  • The number of passes of editing that will take place, depending on the length or content of the manuscript.

  • The service cost is provided in a quote that the Client will review and confirm.

  • The latest date by which the Client will send us the manuscript or any other material needed for the full completion of the work.

  • The latest date by which we will return the completed project.

Important Note: If upon the beginning of the work, it becomes clear that much more work is needed than had been expected in the original discussion or from the draft of the manuscript sent to us, we have the right to and may renegotiate the fee and deadline.

Cost of Services & Payment Agreements

  • An "Agreement of Services" will be provided to the Client based on the manuscript or material sent, the timeline, and the services requested.

  • The Client will pay a fee per hour, word, page, lauda (Brazil), or an agreed flat fee for the service, as agreed on in writing, depending on the type of service requested. Details will always be provided in the quote sent to the Client.

  • All services require a reservation payment. This is a non-refundable fee of 35–50% of the full amount for the service requested paid prior to the beginning of the work. See more details in Reservation Agreements.

  • The Client may request additional services or significantly changes the manuscript, although we highly discourage that. If that happens, a revised quote and project timeline will be negotiated.

  • The same as listed in the item above applies to circumstances where the quote is based on a sample of the manuscript, and the manuscript requires more work than was represented in the sample.

  • An invoice will be sent to the Client once the project is complete. Payments should be received within 15 days once the work is completed, unless a payment plan has been agreed upon. Payments must be made in order to receive the completed work.

  • If a payment plan has been agreed, the details will be included in the "Agreement of Services." In this case, completed work may be sent prior to receiving the full payment.

  • A late fee of 1.5% of the remaining balance will be assessed every 30 days that payment is late.

  • The completed work will be sent to the Client once the invoice has been paid in full, unless agreed otherwise in writing if a payment plan has been agreed upon.

Tiered Pricing

  • We always send a quote that includes three-price options for the client to choose from.

  • The three options are: ideal, good, and minimum.

  • The price choice does not impact or change how we will deliver the requested service.

  • We do not ask the Client to justify their price choice.

  • The Client is responsible for being honest about their choice, as this is an opportunity Bardo Editorial chose to operate on to be able to provide services to anyone requesting a service regardless of their life or financial circumstances.

Reservation Agreements

  • There is a non-refundable deposit of 35–50% of the total quoted amount for the service requested to reserve time in our schedule for the Client’s project.

  • The percentage of the deposit will depend on the total amount quoted.

    • Services of USD 200.00 / R$ 500,00 or less require a full payment deposit.

    • Services that total between USD USD 201.00 / R$ 501,00 and USD 500.00 / R$ 1,000.00 required a 50% deposit.

    • Services that total USD 501.00 / R$ 1001,00 or more require a deposit of 35% when a payment plan is made.

    • Services that total USD 501.00 / R$ 1001,00 or more require a deposit of 50% when a payment plan is not made.

  • The "Agreement of Services" serves as a contract between the Client and Bardo Editorial. The Client must agree in writing upon receiving the Agreement by email.

  • Upon receiving the confirmation for the services in writing, an invoice for the deposit will be sent to the Client.

  • The deposit fee should be paid within three days after receiving and confirming the "Agreement of Services." We won't begin to work on the service request until we receive the deposit payment.

  • Once the work is completed, the deposit will be deducted from the final invoice.

Payment Plans

  • Projects that total USD 200.00 / R$ 500,00 or less will be invoiced in full in advance.

  • For services that total between USD 201.00 / R$ 501,00 and USD 500.00 / R$ 1,000.00, the Client is required to pay the deposit and the remaining balance after completion of the work.

  • For services that total USD 501.00 / R$ 1001,00 or more, payment plans may be available upon request and will be negotiated case by case.

  • Other options are available upon request and agreement by both parties.

Cancellation and Refund Policies

  • We try to make manuscripts and other services as free of errors as possible, we can’t, however, guarantee an error-free work. The Client is required to pay for work completed as agreed under these Terms.

  • If the Client decides to cancel the requested service:

    • Prior to the start date: The deposit will not be refunded, and no other fees will be charged.

    • After work has begun: Bardo Editorial reserves the right to invoice 100% of the total agreed fee regardless of the completion of the work.

  • If we are unable to complete the requested service under these Terms of a prior written agreement because of extraordinary circumstances, such as health issues or family emergencies, we will contact the Client in writing as soon as possible to renegotiate the deadline or provide different solutions. In this case, the deposit will be refunded.

  • Content Disclosure: We reserve the right to stop working on any project if it contains content that may be considered discriminatory or hateful at any time. The Client is responsible for letting us know of that content prior to the beginning of the work. In the case of the content not being disclosed ahead of time and we are unable to complete the work because of it, the Client will be invoiced for the work already done.

  • Plagiarism: If the Client has been found to have plagiarized the materials sent to us while we were working on their project, we will stop working immediately and invoice payment for all work done up to that point. If the case of the work done is less than the deposit amount, the full deposit will be kept. The Client holds Bardo Editorial harmless against any charges of plagiarism alleged in their work while we are working on a project or after the completion of the requested service.

  • Both the Client and I have the right to cancel a contract for services if there is a serious breach of its terms.

Copyright and Content Usage

  • Any content created by Bardo Editorial as part of the editorial process will become the Client's copyright, unless otherwise agreed.

  • Any content of the work will be kept confidential and not made known to anyone other than the Client and its contractors without prior written permission.

  • We may use the Client’s name or project in our website portfolio, unless requested otherwise by the Client.

After Completion of Services

  • Any changes made to the manuscript or any other materials after we complete the work and send it to the Client are done at the Client’s discretion.

  • Use of Bardo's services does not guarantee acceptance by an agent or publisher, or approval of a dissertation or thesis.

  • Our editing feedback can’t be used in blurbs, cover copy, or any promotional materials for the Client’s project.

  • Acknowledgments: We must review any mentions of being a contributor to a project before it’s published, or we can decline to be mentioned.
